PVC trim planning guide
Cellular PVC trim replaces rotting wood without the paint cycle aluminum capping hides.
CertainTeed Restoration Millwork and AZEK Trim are separate cellular PVC lines we install on Bergen, Passaic, Essex, Union, and Morris county jobs. NJ Vinyl Siding specs trim, siding, and flashing together so window heads and corners stay watertight.

What cellular PVC trim is on a North Jersey exterior
Cellular PVC trim is engineered board stock molded from closed-cell PVC. It cuts like wood, holds crisp edges at window surrounds and corners, and does not rot, split, or need exterior paint on factory finishes.
Wood trim on older Bergen and Essex county homes fails at window sills, rake boards, and porch posts where water sits. Aluminum coil capping wraps existing wood but can dent, separate at seams, and still leaves rotting wood underneath. Cellular PVC replaces the trim board itself.
NJ Vinyl Siding installs cellular PVC trim on full siding replacements and targeted trim upgrades. Your written proposal names the manufacturer line, profile, and color before boards are ordered.
- Closed-cell PVC: no grain, no moisture absorption, no insect damage
- Factory colors and paintable options depending on line
- Pairs with vinyl, Ascend, Hardie, and stone on the same contract
- Not the same as vinyl siding panels: thicker trim stock at openings
CertainTeed Restoration Millwork: corners, frieze, and window surrounds
Restoration Millwork is CertainTeed's cellular PVC trim and millwork line. It is a separate product family from CertainTeed Monogram and MainStreet siding panels, though the brands pair well on the same elevation.
Restoration Millwork covers corner boards, frieze boards, window and door surrounds, column wraps, and decorative trim profiles. On Ridgewood, Wayne, and Montclair jobs we often spec Restoration Millwork trim with Monogram or MainStreet field walls so corners and heads match the siding color deck.
NJ Vinyl Siding documents Restoration Millwork profile and color in your proposal. It is not AZEK Trim. The two lines come from different manufacturers with separate color programs and accessory catalogs.
- Manufacturer: CertainTeed (Restoration Millwork line)
- Corner boards, frieze, window and door casings, column wraps
- Pairs with Monogram, MainStreet, and Cedar Impressions siding
- Separate from AZEK Trim: different brand, different color deck
- Paintable and factory-finish boards per profile
AZEK Trim: a separate cellular PVC line
AZEK Trim is cellular PVC trim from AZEK Company. It is not a CertainTeed product and should not be confused with Restoration Millwork, even though both are cellular PVC.
AZEK fits window and bay surrounds, band boards, corner boards, and decorative trim where homeowners want a crisp wood replacement look without upkeep. North Jersey bay windows and box windows often get AZEK head casings, side jambs, and sill details that read clean from the street.
NJ Vinyl Siding installs AZEK Trim on jobs where the homeowner or architect names AZEK, or where AZEK color and profile fit the elevation. We do not label AZEK work as CertainTeed in proposals, photos, or warranties.
- Manufacturer: AZEK Company (AZEK Trim line)
- Window, bay, and bow surrounds with low-maintenance faces
- Separate color and profile catalog from Restoration Millwork
- Not CertainTeed: order specs, warranties, and branding differ
- Installed with expansion gaps and sealed fasteners per AZEK spec
When PVC trim beats aluminum capping
Aluminum coil capping wraps existing wood trim with formed metal. It is fast and economical when the wood underneath is sound. It is a poor fix when sills are soft, corner boards are punky, or prior capping trapped water against the substrate.
Cellular PVC trim makes sense when you want a permanent wood replacement at openings, when existing trim is too far gone to cap cleanly, or when the street presentation matters on resale streets in Franklin Lakes, Glen Rock, and Summit.
NJ Vinyl Siding quotes PVC trim and capping options on site so you see cost and longevity side by side before tear-off.
- Capping: best when wood is solid and budget is tight
- PVC trim: best when wood is rotted or you want true board stock
- Mixed jobs: PVC at sills and rakes, capping at secondary openings
- Full siding tear-off: replace trim while sheathing is visible
Install quality: expansion, sealing, and siding integration
Cellular PVC expands and contracts with temperature swings. NJ Vinyl Siding leaves manufacturer expansion gaps at long runs, miter joints, and butt seams so boards do not buckle in summer heat.
Head flashing and pan flashing at windows must direct water out before trim boards lock in. We integrate PVC surrounds with housewrap, J-channel or trim receivers, and kick-out diverters on full siding replacements.
Trim work done after siding without opening the wall often leaves hidden rot. The best time to replace PVC trim is when panels are off and sheathing is open on the same contract.
- Expansion gaps at long runs per manufacturer chart
- Sealed fastener heads and bonded joints where spec requires
- Integrated head flashing before window trim goes on
- Tear-off sequencing: sheathing repair, wrap, trim, then field panels
- Color-matched caulk at dissimilar material transitions
