What a porch column wrap is

A column wrap is a hollow PVC or cellular trim shell that slides over an existing structural post or porch column. It gives a clean, square or rounded finished face without tearing out the post and rebuilding from scratch.

On North Jersey colonials, split-levels, and craftsman homes, front porch posts often rot at the base where water sits against the footing. NJ Vinyl Siding installs column wraps after checking the post underneath and repairing soft wood before the shell goes on.

    • Hollow PVC or Restoration Millwork column profiles
    • Slides over wood or engineered posts
    • Base trim and cap pieces finish top and bottom
    • Pairs with portico roofs and entry door trim

When to wrap instead of rebuild

Wrap when the structural post is still solid but the visible face is cracked, rotted, or mismatched to new siding. Rebuild when the post is leaning, undersized for the roof load, or punky through the full section.

Column wraps are also the right call when you are refreshing trim and siding but the porch structure itself is sound. NJ Vinyl Siding inspects from the base up before recommending wrap versus rebuild.

    • Wrap: sound structure, bad finish
    • Rebuild: lean, rot through post, undersized beam
    • Often bundled with window trim and portico siding
    • Stone or cultured base can stay; wrap starts above

    Materials and profiles

NJ Vinyl Siding uses cellular PVC column wraps from AZEK Trim and CertainTeed Restoration Millwork, matched to your window and door trim line. White is most common on Bergen County streets; paintable PVC profiles accept custom colors when the HOA requires a specific shade.

Capitals, bases, and split columns are cut on site. We do not ship factory one-piece units that never fit your actual post width.

    • Square and tapered PVC column profiles
    • AZEK and Restoration Millwork, named on your quote
    • Base and capital trim at footing and roof line
    • Color-matched to window casing on the same job

Install sequence with siding and porticos

On full exterior jobs, column wraps go on after housewrap and before or after field siding depending on how the porch ties to the wall. On trim-only porch refreshes, we remove old wrap or rotted casing, repair the post, then slide new PVC shells and seal joints.

NJ Vinyl Siding coordinates column wraps with portico roofing, entry door trim, and stone veneer bases so the whole entry reads as one finished assembly.

    • Post repair before wrap, never hide rot
    • Flashing at roof-to-column joint checked first
    • Sealed joints and fastener heads per manufacturer spec
    • Same crew measures posts and window trim

    Column wrap FAQ

Yes, when the structural post is still solid. NJ Vinyl Siding slides PVC column wraps over sound posts after checking for rot at the base and roof joint. If the post is leaning or punky through the section, we recommend rebuild instead of wrap.
