Pompton Lakes

The borough has a variety of parks and outdoor facilities. Located a short distance from Midtown Manhattan, Pompton Lakes is known for its excellent schools. This suburb has a high rate of education and a diverse population. Many residents report an Irish, Italian, or Puerto Rican ancestry. Some also identify as Polish.

During the 19th century, the Pompton River became an important industrial center, producing iron ore. Anthracite coal was used in furnaces. The town also produced munitions for wars. In the late 1870s, the New York, Susquehanna, and Western Railroad opened a local station.

The borough’s first railroad station was on the north side of the tracks, on Station Plaza. During the Civil War, the iron works produced railway carriage springs, knives, and nails. When the mill closed, Mill Street continued to be the name of the street.

During the early 1900s, the population of Pompton Lakes grew considerably. The growing population was largely due to the rapid growth of local employers. By the 1920s, Doc Bier’s Boxing Camp trained Joe Louis and Sugar Ray Robinson. Other prominent locals included Scott Ellsworth, Les Elgart, and Wil Mara.

One of the largest Victorian residences in Pompton Lakes is Vreeland House. Built in 1880, this house is associated with one of the borough’s founding families. Doctor Clarence Vreeland bought the house in 1921. However, the building was demolished in 1994.

Another historical landmark is the Pompton Lakes Post Office. The building features a portrait of Benjamin Franklin, typical federal architecture, and a large mural depicting the history of the borough. Since 2001, the post office has been declared a historic landmark.
