Garretson Forge and Farm

A family farm dating back to 1719, the Garretson Forge and Farm is located at 4-02 River Rd, Fair Lawn, NJ 07410. It is also the oldest historic site in the county. The Peter Garretson House, built in 1720, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Today, visitors can enjoy a variety of programs, including a sand carving workshop.

The farm has six generations of history and is home to the Garretson Forge & Forge Society. It features extensive heirloom gardens and over 50 medicinal herbs. The farm is certified as a Monarch Butterfly Way Station. It is a great place for families and groups to spend time together, or to simply explore history. Afterwards, take some time to explore the farm’s gift shop and enjoy a cup of homemade apple pie or a fresh ice cream!

The historic town of Fair Lawn also has a sandstone museum, the Cadmus House. This 18th century Dutch sandstone building is the oldest building in Fair Lawn. It is situated on River Road just south of Morlot Avenue. It houses a variety of historic artifacts from the early settlers of the county. Visitors can also see Native American arrowheads, World War I and II uniforms, and old farm tools. There are also portions of the Hopper-Croucher farmhouse. There are also period furnishings and toys. The museum has pictures of the fire of the Plaza Building in 1941.

The museum is open year-round, and there are various events held throughout the year. During the summer, visitors can take advantage of the heirloom herb and vegetable gardens and enjoy the scenic views of the Hudson River. Visitors can also participate in hands-on activities. The Hackensack River Keepers Association hosts events related to the museum. This nonprofit organization also operates the museum, and it is a great place to bring the whole family!

While you’re in town, you may want to pay a visit to the Old Stone House. This Dutch-style stone farmhouse is on the State and National Registers of Historic Places and is one of the oldest buildings in Ramsey. The main floor showcases Dutch colonial architecture. It has a junior museum and is open to donations and Loyalist studies. You’ll be able to see a variety of relics and artifacts.

The museum also features an exhibit featuring the history of the American Army. The museum is housed in a historic Dutch house and showcases local history. On display are archival photos, written documents, and news articles, as well as many historic items, including pre-electric kitchen-ware, colonial home crafts, and rocks. The museum also houses the oldest model railroad society in the United States, with over 100 members. Learn more.

You can also visit the Campbell-Christie House, a historic African American cemetery on one of the historic sites in the state. The building was built at a strategic river crossing and served as a battleground, encampment, and intelligence-gathering post. Today, it serves as the headquarters of the Bergen County Historical Society, and it hosts events regularly. It is open to the public by appointment. Next page.
