In addition to animals, you can also ride the train that began operation in 1963. Featuring three trains, the train runs every hour weather permitting. The 388 and 389 trains accompanied the opening of the zoo and were purchased in 1968 and 1971 respectively. The 520 train was added to the lineup in 1977. These train rides, operated by Iron Horse S-24 narrow-gauge trains, are available every day except Mondays for maintenance. The trains pass through a tunnel and railroad crossings.
The zoo has undergone a number of major improvements over the years. In 2009, it established an annual field conservation grant program to assist researchers in North and South America.
