A short trip to the Bergen County Historical Society in River Edge, NJ, will reveal the town’s rich history and unique features. It is located at 1209 Main St, River Edge, NJ 07661. Among the highlights are the saltbox house, the Queen’s Bridge, and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. The site also boasts historic sites such as the Conover Light, the Esso Research Center, the Bayway refinery, and the Morey LaRue Laundry. Other points of interest include Little Falls on the Passaic River, the Beattie and Co. carpet mills, and Washington’s Lookout, all of which can be seen from the top of the bridge.
The Bergen County Historical Society has also compiled an interesting collection of artifacts. Some of these include the famous New Jersey State Historic Site, two other sandstone houses, and a barn. During the holiday season, the historical society offers tours of the restored buildings and hosts special events to educate visitors about the area’s past. It also offers educational programs for children and adults, including the ability to visit local farms.
The Steuben House is a prime example of Bergen Dutch sandstone architecture, located at New Bridge Landing on the Hackensack River in River Edge, NJ. It was confiscated from Loyalist Jan Zabriskie and served as a military headquarters during the Revolutionary War. General George Washington made this building his headquarters from September 4 to 1780. Major General Baron von Steuben occupied the property from 1783 to 1788.
Other points of interest in River Edge include the Sickley House, the Gardner A. Sage Library, the Ward Homestead, and the Morris Canal. These structures are all part of the historical society’s collection, and can be viewed through a scenic bridge. The museum is also home to the World War Monument and the National Memorial for Soldiers. The Society also hosts lectures on various historical subjects. A visit to the museum is well worth the trip!
For history buffs, the museum offers a rich display of historical photographs. There are several notable historical markers in the town, such as the Evergreen Arch, which was built in 1889. Other notable structures are the Elizabethport marker, the Durant Motor Co., and the submarine “Holland”.
Fort Mott is a fort that dates back to 1759. A few other historic sites include the Presbyterian Church and the Public School. There is also a photocopy of a woodcut of the court house and a view of the river. The museum also contains many historical markers, as well as the Valentine House, and the North Hunterdon Regional High School. The town also boasts many other historical sites, such as the Musconetcong River and North Hunterdon Regional High School. Check this out.
The Bergen County Historical Society River Edge NJ also operates the Tavern, which resembles an 18th-century tavern. You can buy souvenirs or refreshments from the gift shop and take advantage of the restroom while you are there.
