The Mansion was built between 1740 and 1750 by Dirck Dey, a Dutch born planter. His grandson sold the mansion to a private owner in 1801. It was later bought by the Passaic County Park Commission in 1930. Today it is operated by the Department of Cultural & Historic Affairs of Passaic County.

Besides being an impressive piece of architecture, the mansion was a significant event in the early American history of the United States. It served as General George Washington’s headquarters during the Revolutionary War. At the time, it was known as Bloomsburg Manor. It was visited by several notable figures of the period including Alexander Hamilton, Elias Dayton, Anthony Wayne, Nathaniel Greene, and Marquis de Lafayette.
During the summer and fall of 1780, General Washington used the Dey Mansion as his headquarters. He stayed until November 27, 1780, when he left to meet with French allies in Newport, Rhode Island. When he returned to the mansion, he wrote 364 letters and orders, the largest of which totaled 594 pages. Some of these letters are kept in the Library of Congress.
