Dey Mansion Washington’s Headquarters

Visiting the Dey Mansion Washington’s Headquarters Wayne, NJ is a great way to learn about the Revolutionary War period. The Dey Mansion was built in the early 1700s and served as General George Washington’s headquarters for three months in 1780. The mansion was restored in the 1930s and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum is open to the public. It is located at 199 Totowa Rd, Wayne, NJ 07470.

Gen. Washington’s headquarters was located behind the marker. During the American Revolution, Washington and his staff occupied the Dey Mansion, as well as the spring house, in the vicinity. Other notable residents who stayed nearby included Lafayette, Nathaniel Greene, Benedict Arnold, and Alexander Hamilton. Washington’s Life Guard also camped near the house. The Dey Mansion is located in Wayne, NJ, a historic town 20 miles south of Manhattan. The town has many parks, historical landmarks, and museums. In addition to the Dey Mansion, Wayne also boasts the Terhune Memorial Park, a 10-acre preserve surrounded by pre-Revolutionary oaks. Terhune Memorial Park is also located nearby. In the 18th century, this town had a thriving literary scene, including the famous poet Albert Payson Terhune. Many of his books contained stories about dogs. Another important landmark in Wayne is the Van Riper-Hopper House, built by Uriah Van Riper in 1786.

Theunis Dey was a Dutch immigrant and married Hester Schuyler in 1749. He and his wife had ten children and kept slaves for heavy farm work. He later became a colonel in the Bergen County militia, and was charged with supervising the west side of the Hudson River. He also held seats in the New Jersey Provincial Council and the Assembly. During the American Revolution, Dey was an active member of the state’s government, and had a home on the Dey Mansion estate.

The project scope of this restoration included structural repairs, stabilization of roof framing, masonry repointing, and flooring restoration. Painting and plaster repairs were also completed as part of the project. The mansion also included MEP and electrical system upgrades. BBA also designed a new 1,800-square-foot visitor center. Despite being a National Historic Landmark, Dey Mansion is a unique place to visit. The 18th-century mansion is covered with beautiful oak trees and contains the Terhune Collection of books. The building was once home to Jacob Ford Jr., and his wife, Jane. The mansion was built on a former powder mill. Later, Jacob Ford built the historic Lambert Castle and Ford Mansion in nearby Oakland. Next article
