Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary
The Cora Hartshorn Arboretum, also known as the “Hartshorn” because of its name, is a nonprofit organization in Short Hills, New Jersey, dedicated to environmental education and forest conservation. It also fosters volunteerism and citizen science. The sanctuary began as a gift of land from the Cora E. Hartshorn estate to the township in 1923. Its Stone House was built using trap rock from Stewart Hartshorn’s quarry in Springfield. In 1961, the Short Hills Garden Club took ownership of the property. In 2007, a major renovation was undertaken to the buildings. It is located at 324 Forest Dr S, Short Hills, NJ 07078.
The Cora Hartshorn Arboretum is home to multiple species of trees and ferns. There are also many species of birds and a stone house, which was built in the year 133. It features a natural amphitheater formed by glaciers and an amphitheater, which is ideal for bird watching. Visitors can also enjoy educational classes. The Cora Hartshorn Arboretum is open all year round, during daylight hours.
The arboretum was founded in 1923 by Stewart and Cora Hartshorn, who were both passionate gardeners. The arboretum features over 16 acres of woodland, kettle moraines, and hilly slopes. There are three miles of woodland trails, an amphitheater formed by glaciers, and an observatory and small live animal collection. The Stone House is also open to the public and features a cafe and gift shop.
This property is located in the city of Millburn, just outside New York. The town is conveniently located on the Midtown Direct line and features a large commuter parking area. It also has a pharmacy and a small downtown. You can also explore the trees on the grounds while enjoying lunch at the Boxcar Grill. You’ll find many varieties of trees at the Arboretum.
If you are interested in studying nature, you can also visit the David C. Shaw Arboretum. This beautiful arboretum was home to the first female landscape architect in the United States. With over 100 acres of land and a variety of native plants, the garden offers something for everyone. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom on the park’s largest collection, and thousands of visitors flock to the arboretum for their chance to see them in person.
In addition to the arboretum, the Thielke Arboretum is located in nearby Linwood, Oregon. This small hidden gem has been created with a grant from the Open Spaces program. Its diverse collection of trees and ornamentals includes dawn redwoods, redbuds, and hollies. It’s open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas. The grounds are open dawn to dusk on weekends and after four o’clock on weekdays. If you’re looking to spend the day outdoors, there’s a Citizen Science program that lets you play the role of a scientist while you study the plants and birds.
