Boonton is a town that has changed greatly over the years. It began as a small village that was tucked under the Jersey City Reservoir. After the construction of the Morris Canal in 1829, the town grew into a bustling community. Now, downtown Boonton is thriving with new businesses and cottage industries.

During World War I, the John Taylor building served as a military post. In 1959, the Boonton Historical Society took over the building and transformed it into a museum. Funding for the renovations came from several sources, including the American Legion Post #124 and the State of New Jersey. A civic group worked to refurbish the building and repointed the bricks.

Today, the Boonton Historical Society and Museum is housed in the John Taylor Building, which was originally the residence of Dr. John L. Taylor and his wife Adelaide.

The building is in a Colonial Revival and Victorian Gothic style. Originally, the building had a porch at the rear of the main floor. However, during the 1960s, the dormers were removed to remedy a leaking roof. As a result, the building was no longer eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.

Since the move to the John Taylor Building, the Boonton History Society has been able to preserve and display a wide assortment of historic artifacts. They feature a display on the town’s history, as well as exhibits on its industrial, agricultural, and shipping histories.

One of the most popular exhibits is the Trolley era exhibition. You can learn about the history of the streetcar by viewing memorabilia such as lithographs, post cards, and badges. Also, a scale model of a trolley car is on display.

At Christmas time, the Boonton Museum held a festive event. Throughout the day, visitors can find a variety of different Christmas items, such as ornaments and stuffed animals. Plus, there are specials in the gift shops. Next post
