One of the most interesting attractions of the area is Apshawa Preserve. Located in West Milford, the 576 acre natural park is managed by the New Jersey Conservation Foundation. Not only is it home to a 43-acre reservoir, but it is also a great place to see the many flora and fauna of the northern New Jersey region.
The park is open year round. There are several different hiking trails to explore. Most are short, though you can venture into the woods for longer routes if you want. Another fun activity is biking along the Hamburg Turnpike. Some gas stations are available along the route.
Another noteworthy attraction is the Franklin Parker Preserve. Previously a part of the Faustini property, the new owners are working with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to preserve the park. You can learn more about the park by reading a blog post from the NJ Urban Forest.
Although there aren’t as many restaurants in Apshawa as in other parts of New Jersey, there are still plenty of places to grab a bite to eat. If you aren’t in the mood to cook, you can also check out the many bars and clubs in the town. However, if you are looking for more low key activities, the NJ state parks system is a great option.
The best time to visit the park is in the summer. On a hot day, you may want to consider going in the early morning or late afternoon. During the colder months, the weather can be a bit chilly, but you should be able to find enough breathable air to get through the day.
